The Draft Or The Tapering

The last step in the die-casting process is to remove the metallic structure from the mold after it has assumed its final form. So, you must consider the tapering or the degree to which the mold can be tapered to remove the metallic structure from the mold. 

Again, when the level of tapering is to be considered, one must take into account the contraction or the expansion of the walls of the mold due to cold and heat, respectively. Again, the extent to which the inner and the outer walls of the mold shrink or expand will be different, and thus, the extent of tempering both these walls also needs to be considered while creating the mold. The ultimate aim of the die-casting process is to create a perfect metallic structure using the mold. So, the draft or the tempering must be attuned to create the ideal metallic structure.

The Filets

A filet is nothing but a structure that creates a smooth edge and helps avoid sharp angular turns in a mold. Sharp angular turns in a mold are very prone to introduce imperfections in the mold. Also, sharp turns may create edges that are prone to cracks or breaks. So, in order to avoid any cracks or breaks in the final metallic structure, filets are introduced at all sharp edges of the mold. However, the only exception is the parting lines, which are the places that join two parts of the mold.

Holes In The Mold

Several holes of varying diameters are created in the mold to aid the ejection process of the final metallic structure. The holes may aid in absorbing extra pressure that may, in turn, help in smooth ejection.
